Spring Forward!

Spring is a time of change. Hibernation is passé. No more excuses for the status quo. It’s time to move out and move on.

Before the “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip bit the dust, one Sunday strip said it very well. The two of them are racing down the mountain on a toboggan. Calvin says to Hobbes, “Change is invigorating! If you don’t accept new challenges, you become complacent and lazy! Your life atrophies! Change forces us to experiment and adapt! That’s how we learn and grow.”

Jerry Jones the controversial Dallas Cowboys owner recently said, “My personal philosophy regarding change and progress is that innovation is not a spectator sport.”  Mr. Jones’ comment indicates that change doesn’t come easy. There is a possibility that we might not change unless we’re forced to. What would our lives be like if we didn’t have to change? Boring!!

Scientists have been trying to develop a machine that will allow travel back in time. Theoretically you can’t change the past, but you may be able to visit. Some people still live in the past. They haven’t made it to the present, and they’re certainly not ready for the future.

If you’re in the healthcare business, you know change is a constant. You know that if you don’t keep up you’ll get run over. One of the neat things about the healthcare business is that there are always new experiences waiting around the corner. Each day is exciting and life is seldom boring.

Calvin and Hobbes’ toboggan headed over a cliff sending the two of them sprawling, faces buried in the snow. Hobbes says, “The problem with new experiences is that they’re so rarely the ones you choose.”  Calvin days, “I feel smarter already.”

We can’t always have the types of changes we would like, but the truth is, we’re usually a lot better off for the experience.
